Pregnancy Yoga

Pregnancy Yoga

WHY IS PREGNANCY YOGA SO BENEFICIAL?
Pregnancy is an opportunity to tune more deeply into your body than you have before. Yoga encourages you to create a connection between mind, emotions and the physical body…and to connect with your baby.

Pregnancy yoga will help you to:

  • Maintain your energy levels
  • Balance your hormones
  • Manage back pain
  • Increase flexibility safely and gently
  • Strengthen your pelvic floor
  • Keep good posture throughout pregnancy
  • Practice relaxation techniques to prepare for birth

PREGNANCY YOGA GUIDELINES
We encourage you not to start any new forms of exercise, including Yoga, during the first trimester of your pregnancy. If you have been practising Yoga regularly prior to becoming pregnant, it is safe to continue gently and mindfully.

Once you reach second trimester, join our pregnancy yoga classes to be led through a practice created specifically for the challenges AND joys pregnancy brings.

If you are an experienced Yoga student and would like to continue your regular practice into your second trimester (and maybe even third trimester!), contact us to arrange a once-only private Yoga session. Your teacher will explain how to modify a Yoga Flow class to accommodate your growing belly and softening tissues safely.

Although we have lots of props at the studio, we encourage you bring along any cushion or blanket that you find particularly comfortable. Pregnancy is a time to self-nurture, so support yourself in any way you find helpful!

You should never come along to Hot Yoga classes while pregnant and avoid overheating in any form of exercise by resting when you need to.

Some general guidelines to keep in mind…

  • Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day
  • Pregnancy is a time to exercise gently – listen to your body and rest when you need to
  • Check with your doctor before beginning Yoga for the first time, especially during pregnancy
  • Always approach your Yoga practice with an attitude of mindfulness and self-compassion
  • If a pose or technique doesn’t feel right for you, it probably isn’t. Speak with your teacher about an alternative or modification. Never force a stretch.
